| CHAPTER NINE
Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen to earth from the sky, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit.
The first woe is the fifth trumpet. Until this time, all that has happened centered on nature, now we are going to see the super natural at work on mankind. Angel in the Greek means messenger, which can be any of the five-fold ministries as well as an angel. Jesus originally had the key then gave it to an angel to do His bidding, the same angel mentioned in Rev 1:18 and Rev 20:1. Therefore, in this case the star is an angel. The pit is the entrance into the bottomless abyss.
When he opened it, smoke poured out as though from a huge furnace, and the sunlight and air turned dark from the smoke.
This smoke could be the result of a huge volcano causing the lake of fire, which also will cause the sun to darken resulting from all the debris. This lake of fire is literally made of molten lava. This lake of fire could very well be the same one mentioned in Rev 20:10. It's also very possible the "lake of fire" will be here on Earth.
Then locusts came from the smoke and descended on the earth, and they were given power to sting like scorpions.
These locusts represent spiritual warfare when seen in the scriptures. We must remember John is ninety years old and never having heard of much less seen any things from modern times. He does his best to describe what he is seeing, as well as writing in code to get this past the guards. Scorpions not only have a bad sting but there is one variety that will cause a person to have a nervous breakdown. These scorpians work on the nervous system, causing a person to want to die but won't actually kill them. Therefore, it is obvious these locusts are dangerous to the human body. Locusts are a variety of grasshopper used as a type of judgment as in the days of Moses. There are many similarities between the judgments issued out to the Egyptians and these during the tribulation.
But the Lord sent his servant Moses, along with Aaron, whom he had chosen. 27 They performed miraculous signs among the Egyptians, and wonders in the land of Ham. 28 The Lord blanketed Egypt in darkness, for they had defied his commands to let his people go. 29 He turned their water into blood, poisoning all the fish.
30 Then frogs overran the land and even invaded the king’s bedrooms. 31 When the Lord spoke, flies descended on the Egyptians, and gnats swarmed across Egypt. 32 He sent them hail instead of rain, and lightning flashed over the land. 33 He ruined their grapevines and fig trees and shattered all the trees. 34 He spoke, and hordes of locusts came— young locusts beyond number. 35 They ate up everything green in the land, destroying all the crops in their fields. 36 Then he killed the oldest son in each Egyptian home, the pride and joy of each family.
These locusts are a type of devouring army. These locusts or what ever they may be, are under the control of demons.
The armies of Midian, Amalek, and the people of the east had settled in the valley like a swarm of locusts. Their camels were like grains of sand on the seashore—too many to count!
Grasshoppers and locusts are always spoken of in the scriptures as something huge.
They were told not to harm the grass or plants or trees, but only the people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.
As natural locusts eat all the foliage in their path, these super natural ones will attack all those not having the mark of God. We as children of God have nothing to fear, once again we are being protected by the hand of God. We are covered by the Blood of the Lamb.
They were told not to kill them but to torture them for five months with pain like the pain of a scorpion sting. 6 In those days people will seek death but will not find it. They will long to die, but death will flee from them!
Those lost souls will be tormented for five long months finding no solace of any kind, nearly loosing their mind, but alas, no peace can be found. Neither death nor insanity can come to the rescue of these poor creatures. This terrible sting could be the result of a drug of some kind.
The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle. They had what looked like gold crowns on their heads, and their faces looked like human faces.
We need to keep in mind that John is trying to describe something he had never seen nor even dreamed of before, this was written two thousand years ago. These crowns could be elaborate helmets worn by the pilots of helicopters. Their faces could be the front of the war helicopter or the faces of the pilot.
They look like horses; they charge forward like warhorses
These horses could be Apache helicopters heavily armed which to John was best described as a horse.
They had hair like women’s hair and teeth like the teeth of a lion.
This hair again could be the helicopter as the propeller whirls. The teeth could be weapons projecting from the helicopter.
They wore armor made of iron, and their wings roared like an army of chariots rushing into battle.
The sound could be the sound the helicopter makes. The breastplates.. again the exterior of the helicopter.
Their appearance is like the appearance of horses, and like war horses and horsemen, so do they run.
You should take a moment and read all of Joel 1 and 2 keeping the modern warfare in mind.
They had tails that stung like scorpions, and for five months they had the power to torment people.
Again for five months this torment will take place. These tails could be sprayers from the tail of the helicopter sending out chemicals through a gas which torments the nervous system. This spray could be the smoke which verse 2 above speaks of.
Their king is the angel from the bottomless pit; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon—the Destroyer.
Locusts don't have a king or a queen, which again points us to the Apache. This king is the leading fallen angel over this demonic army of locusts.
The first terror is past, but look, two more terrors are coming! 13 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice speaking from the four horns of the gold altar that stands in the presence of God.
This second woe is the sixth trumpet. The golden altar could be the Ark of the Covenant. Many believe the original is still in Heaven with our Father, that the one made on Earth was a photo type of the original.
And the voice said to the sixth angel who held the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great Euphrates River.” 15 Then the four angels who had been prepared for this hour and day and month and year were turned loose to kill one-third of all the people on earth.
These are fallen angels since God's angels are not bound. The Euphrates River goes from Syria to Iraq and has twenty-two dams; this river separates Israel from her enemies. This river is in the Old Testament symbolic to be a military invasion, which God uses to bring judgment. This is where the armies from the north will cross over into Israel. At the time of this vision, there was no way possible for man to cross over this river. Now, with the dams in place this makes it possible to dry this river up at will.
I heard the size of their army, which was 200 million mounted troops.
This army will rise up later in the tribulation to fight the anti-Christ. Not all in the world will be won over and stay loyal to this man of perdition. At the time of this vision, the entire population of Earth was not two-hundred-million [200,000,000], let alone an army of this number. Today China boasts of an army of two-hundred-million [200,000,000]! China is in the process of making a road going “nowhere”. This road goes through Tibet and the Himalayan Mountains, toward Israel. China forbids this road to be used by civilians; it is strictly for military use.
And in my vision, I saw the horses and the riders sitting on them. The riders wore armor that was fiery red and dark blue and yellow. The horses had heads like lions, and fire and smoke and burning sulfur billowed from their mouths. 18 One-third of all the people on earth were killed by these three plagues—by the fire and smoke and burning sulfur that came from the mouths of the horses. 19 Their power was in their mouths and in their tails. For their tails had heads like snakes, with the power to injure people.
This describes weapons of war such as tanks with flame throwers. In all probability, this is nuclear warfare, which is the only weapon able to kill one-third of humanity. Brimstone is sulfur, which is in gunpowder and paralyzes the lungs. It is estimated that 2 billion people will die as a result of this war.
And the Lord will send a plague on all the nations that fought against Jerusalem. Their people will become like walking corpses, their flesh rotting away. Their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths. 13 On that day they will be terrified, stricken by the Lord with great panic. They will fight their neighbors hand to hand. 14 Judah, too, will be fighting at Jerusalem. The wealth of all the neighboring nations will be captured—great quantities of gold and silver and fine clothing. 15 This same plague will strike the horses, mules, camels, donkeys, and all the other animals in the enemy camps.
These verses describe the effects the nuclear bomb will have on a person.
But the people who did not die in these plagues still refused to repent of their evil deeds and turn to God. They continued to worship demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood—idols that can neither see nor hear nor walk! 21 And they did not repent of their murders or their witchcraft or their sexual immorality or their thefts.
The state of humankind at this point is absolute chaos. Lawlessness and perversion will be acceptable. Demon possession will be commonplace.
