| CHAPTER 5
AND I saw lying on the open hand of Him Who was seated on the throne a scroll (book) written within and on the back, closed and sealed with seven seals;
SCROLLS were made from the Papyrus plant, cut into strips and pressed into a material they could write on. They would use this method or the skin of sheep or a paper made from bark. Which ever they chose to use it was rolled a little way then sealed, written on again then rolled and sealed again, this being repeated until there were seven rolls sealed, making it so no one could open it.
The SEAL [Gk. Sphragis] represents the seal of the Living God. It’s an emblem of ownership and security with a destination! Glory to GOD!! This scroll contains the future course of the “entire world”. It tells how the world will be judged and the final triumph of God’s people over evil. When each seal is broken a portion of the book’s content was revealed in a vision.
Seven being the number for completion shows this scroll is complete with no possibilities of additions. This scroll has now become the center of attention.
And when I looked, behold, a hand was stretched out to me and behold, a scroll of a book was in it. And He spread it before me and it was written within and on the back, and written on it were words of lamentation and mourning and woe.
This is indicative of the Great Tribulation.
And I saw a strong angel announcing in a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the scroll? And [who is entitled and deserves and is morally fit] to break its seals? 3) And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth [in the realm of the dead, Hades] was able to open the scroll or to take a [single] look at its contents. 4) And I wept audibly and bitterly because no one was found fit to open the scroll or to inspect it.
John was told to write down the things shown to him and warn the body of Christ. Now not only is he unable to open the book but no one is allowed to open it for none are righteous. His heart is broken, he is unable to do what is asigned for him to do.
“At that time Michael, the archangel who stands guard over your nation, will arise. Then there will be a time of anguish greater than any since nations first came into existence. But at that time every one of your people whose name is written in the book will be rescued. 2) Many of those whose bodies lie dead and buried will rise up, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting disgrace. 3) Those who are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever. 4) But you, Daniel, keep this prophecy a secret; seal up the book until the time of the end, when many will rush here and there, and knowledge will increase.”
These are the last days and knowledge has increased faster then we can comprehend. The scrolls were sealed for today. As a grandmother, I remember the wood burning cook stoves and ovens, as well as the icebox and the iceman coming once a week to drop off the block of ice. I was eight yrs old when I first saw T.V. and it was a tiny screen with a lot of snow. My grandchildren have possessions I cannot begin to understand what they do much less how to operate them. Yes man’s knowledge has increased rapidly over the years. As we study the Bible today, we understand the writings in Daniel as well as this Book of Revelation which a few years ago we would read it with out any clearity.
Then one of the elders [of the heavenly Sanhedrin] said to me, Stop weeping! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root (Source) of David, has won (has overcome and conquered)! He can open the scroll and break its seven seals!
Glory to God, all is not lost, there is one righteous that one is Jesus Christ pictured here as a Lion. Metaphorically this refers to three great features of the Lion: His majesty, strength and royalty. Jesus Christ is from the tribe of Judah and the family of David. In all earthly Kindoms Royalty must have a lineage so it is in our Lord as well.
Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot— yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. 2) And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. 3) He will delight in obeying the Lord. He will not judge by appearance nor make a decision based on hearsay. 4)He will give justice to the poor and make fair decisions for the exploited. The earth will shake at the force of his word, and one breath from his mouth will destroy the wicked. 5) He will wear righteousness like a belt and truth like an undergarment.
Glory to the Lord, this is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who alone is worthy to open the scroll.
Then I saw a Lamb that looked as if it had been slaughtered, but it was now standing between the throne and the four living beings and among the twenty-four elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which represent the sevenfold Spirit of God that is sent out into every part of the earth.
Christ appears as a LAMB that bears the marks of having been sacrificed, pointing to His own sacrifice on Mt. Calvary for our sins and that of all mankind. The Hebrew word for SEVEN is (shib’ah); this means Sacred, Abundant One, infinite number, complete. HORNS represent strength and power. We see Jesus Christ as the Total Authority, worthiness, power, and magnificence. The Seven spirits of God are addressed in Isa 11.
He stepped forward and took the scroll from the right hand of the one sitting on the throne. 8) And when he took the scroll, the four living beings and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp, and they held gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. 9) And they sang a new song with these words:
“You are worthy to take the scroll
and break its seals and open it.
For you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God
from every tribe and language and people and nation.
10) And you have caused them to become
a Kingdom of priests for our God.
And they will reign on the earth.”
Jesus went up to His Father and God handed the scroll over to Him. For He alone is worthy to open this scroll. Do you notice this song? This is the song of the New Covenant, what a beautiful song it is.
The Rapture has not occured yet, for the elders are singing about "them" which says we are not there yet. Our prayers are in this these bowls held by the elders. All of our prayers are precious to the Lord and are still active, so never stop those prayers.
Verse 11 NIV
Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders.
There are millions of millions of God's angels. What have we to fear? We are never unprotected.
In a loud voice they sang:
"Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!"
Heaven must be a wonderful place with much singing, I can't wait to be there too!
And I heard every created thing in heaven and on earth and under the earth [in Hades, the place of departed spirits] and on the sea and all that is in it, crying out together, To Him Who is seated on the throne and to the Lamb be ascribed the blessing and the honor and the majesty (glory, splendor) and the power (might and dominion) forever and ever (through the eternities of the eternities)
Every thing will praise the Lord , what a marvelous thing this will be.
