|Dead Works What Are They?
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God
In the Greek [which is what the original New Testament was written in]:
Dead [nekroo]=to put to death, in the sense of destroying the strength of, depriving of power the evil desires working in the body.
This scripture is speaking of "Legalism".
We can give up everything and still not have Salvation.
When I first was saved I was told not to wear earrings for this was wrong. Even though they were tiny [although I see nothing wong even if they were huge]. I really tried to do all that was told to me in order to be "mature".
Then one day the Lord told me to look up a scripture:
Gal 2:4-5 Amp Bible
[My precaution was] because of false brethren (some men who were Christians in name only) who had been secretly smuggled in [to the Christian brotherhood]: they had slipped in to spy on our liberty and the freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might again bring us into bondage [under the Law of Moses]. To them we did not yield submission even for a moment, that the truth of the Gospel might continue to be [preserved] for you [in its purity].
This in no way means we are to sin and walk in the ways of the world. When we are "truly" saved, we won't want to sin, but giving up "sin:" will not win us Salvation which only comes through our LORD Jesus Christ.
The scriptures are telling us to put our faith in the Lord not in ourselves!
